Living in Chilliwack with an undersized or aging electrical panel? CN Electrical performs complete panel upgrades — 100A to 200A, 60A to 200A, and Federal Pioneer/Federal Pacific panel replacements — for homes across Chilliwack, Sardis, Promontory, Rosedale, and the Fraser Valley. We provide the complete upgrade package: load calculation, panel installation, service entrance cable and meter base replacement, whole-panel surge protection, and Technical Safety BC permit and inspection.

Our licensed electricians handle the full scope — from coordinating the BC Hydro service disconnect to labeling every circuit in the new panel — so your upgraded electrical service is safe, reliable, and ready for whatever you add next. Read our guide: When to Upgrade Your Electrical Panel: 7 Signs You Shouldn't Ignore.

A panel upgrade is one of the most impactful improvements you can make to your home's electrical safety and functionality. Modern 200-amp panels feature copper bus bars, whole-panel surge protection, and ample circuit space for future additions. An older 60-amp or 100-amp panel that's already serving a heat pump, electric range, dryer, and basement suite may be running dangerously close to its rated capacity — and adding an EV charger or hot tub without upgrading the service can push it past the safe limit. CN Electrical performs a thorough load calculation before every upgrade, confirming the scope of work and giving you a firm written quote. Read our guide: Electrical Safety in Older Chilliwack Homes: What to Look For.

We upgrade panels in single-family homes, townhouses, stratas, and commercial properties. Every upgrade includes the new panel with copper bus bars, properly sized service entrance conductors, a new meter base if required, whole-panel surge protection, clear circuit labeling, and a Technical Safety BC permit and inspection. From the first site visit to the final sign-off, we make upgrading your panel straightforward and stress-free.

Your Home's Electrical Panel — the Heart of Your Electrical System

Your electrical panel is the single most important piece of equipment in your home's electrical system. Every circuit, every outlet, every appliance — from your fridge to your furnace to your EV charger — flows through the panel. When the panel is undersized, outdated, or deteriorating, the consequences aren't just inconvenient — they can be dangerous.

In Chilliwack, many homes built before the 1990s still have their original 100-amp or even 60-amp electrical service. At the time these homes were built, a typical household had a fridge, a stove, a few lamps, and a television. Today, the average Chilliwack home runs a heat pump, an electric range, a clothes dryer, multiple computers, a home entertainment system, and increasingly an EV charger and a hot tub — loads that can easily overwhelm a 100-amp panel. A panel that's constantly running near its rated capacity runs hotter, trips breakers more often, and is more likely to develop loose connections over time.

CN Electrical has upgraded panels in homes across Chilliwack — from Federal Pioneer panel replacements in Sardis to 200A service upgrades in Promontory, from 60A-to-200A service modernization on Rosedale acreages to commercial panel upgrades for Garrison Crossing businesses. We handle the complete scope: load calculation, panel selection, service entrance cable, meter base, mast, grounding system, whole-panel surge protection, and Technical Safety BC permit and inspection. Every upgrade is built to the Canadian Electrical Code — so your panel is safe, reliable, and ready for whatever you plug in next.

What We Offer

Electrical Panel Upgrade Services

Complete panel upgrade services — from load calculation and panel selection to service entrance replacement, permit filing, and TSBC inspection sign-off.

100A to 200A Panel Upgrades

Complete service upgrade from 100 amps to 200 amps — including the new 200A panel with copper bus bars, main breaker, and a full set of circuit breakers. We install Square D, Siemens, and Eaton panels and provide clear, permanent circuit labeling so every breaker is identified.

Service Entrance & Meter Base Replacement

Your panel upgrade may also require upgrading the service entrance cable from the utility connection to your meter and from the meter to the panel. We replace undersized aluminum service cable with properly rated copper conductors, install a new meter base, and replace the mast and weatherhead if required — all to current CEC standards.

Federal Pioneer & Federal Pacific Panel Replacement

Homes built in the 1960s through 1980s often have Federal Pioneer (Canadian) or Federal Pacific (US-import) panels with documented bus bar and breaker reliability issues. Many home insurers now require these panels be replaced before issuing or renewing policies. We specialize in safe, complete Federal Pioneer/Pacific panel replacements throughout Chilliwack.

60A to 100A or 200A Service Upgrades for Older Homes

Older Chilliwack homes with 60-amp services can't safely support modern electrical loads. We upgrade 60-amp services to 100-amp or 200-amp — including the panel, service entrance, grounding, and often a complete rewire of obsolete wiring like knob-and-tube or ungrounded cloth-sheathed cable.

Whole-Panel Surge Protection

Every panel upgrade we install includes a whole-panel surge protective device (SPD) — Type 2, UL 1449 listed — that protects every circuit in your home from voltage spikes caused by grid switching, lightning strikes, and motor startups. Far more comprehensive than plug-in surge bars, an SPD at the panel protects hardwired appliances like your furnace, range, and heat pump that can't use plug-in protection.

Permit & TSBC Inspection Management

We handle the complete regulatory process: Technical Safety BC electrical installation permit, BC Hydro service disconnect/reconnect coordination, and provincial inspection scheduling. You receive a Certificate of Compliance confirming your panel upgrade is safe, legal, and documented — required for home insurance, mortgage renewals, and future resale disclosure.

Why CN Electrical

Panel Upgrades Done Right — the First Time

A panel upgrade isn't a handyman job — it's a major electrical project that involves de-energizing your entire home's electrical service, replacing the single most critical piece of equipment in your electrical system, and re-energizing everything safely. An undersized conductor, a poorly torqued connection, or an improperly bonded ground can create a fire hazard that hides behind the panel cover for years. CN Electrical performs every panel upgrade to the Canadian Electrical Code standard — with properly sized conductors, correctly torqued connections, and thorough testing before re-energizing.

  • Red Seal journeyman electricians who understand the Canadian Electrical Code requirements for service upgrades — including conductor sizing per CEC Table 2, grounding and bonding per Section 10, and service entrance requirements per Section 6
  • Dozens of panel upgrades completed across Chilliwack — from Federal Pioneer and Federal Pacific panel replacements in Sardis to 200A service upgrades in Promontory to farm service modernization on Rosedale acreages
  • We handle the complete upgrade scope — panel, service entrance cable, meter base, mast, grounding system, whole-panel surge protection, circuit labeling, and Technical Safety BC permit and inspection — so your upgrade is code-compliant from day one
  • Free on-site assessment: we perform a full load calculation, inspect your existing panel and service entrance, and deliver a firm written quote — no surprises, no last-minute upcharges
  • BC Hydro service disconnect coordination — we schedule and manage the temporary service interruption so your panel swap happens safely with the service de-energized
  • All panel upgrades are permitted and inspected through Technical Safety BC — we don't cut corners on permits, ever. A Certificate of Compliance protects your home insurance and your family's safety
  • $5M commercial liability insurance coverage
  • Serving Chilliwack homeowners from Sardis to Rosedale and throughout the Fraser Valley

Promontory Home — 100A to 200A Panel Upgrade With Service Entrance Replacement

How CN Electrical upgraded a 1980s-era 100-amp Federal Pioneer panel to a modern 200-amp Square D panel in a Promontory home — including a full service entrance replacement, grounding system upgrade, and TSBC permit and inspection — giving the homeowners safe, reliable power with capacity for a future heat pump and EV charger.

The Challenge

A Promontory homeowner contacted CN Electrical after their breaker tripped for the third time in a week — every time the electric range and the clothes dryer ran simultaneously. The home, built in 1984, still had its original 100-amp Federal Pioneer panel. Federal Pioneer panels of that era have known issues with bus bar deterioration and breaker stabs that lose tension over time, increasing the risk of overheating and arcing.

Beyond the immediate nuisance of tripping breakers, the homeowners had plans to add a heat pump, convert the gas water heater to electric, and install a Level 2 EV charger within the next two years. A load calculation confirmed the existing 100-amp service was already at 88% of rated capacity — adding any of those future loads would push it well past the safe limit. A full service upgrade from 100A to 200A was the clear solution.

Our Approach

  • Performed a comprehensive load calculation documenting the existing demand and projected future loads — providing the homeowners with a clear justification for the 200A upgrade and documentation their home insurer requested.
  • Coordinated with BC Hydro to schedule a service disconnect for the morning of the panel swap, ensuring the old panel was safely de-energized before work began.
  • Removed the 1984 Federal Pioneer 100-amp panel and installed a new 200-amp 42-circuit Square D panel with copper bus bars, a whole-panel surge protector, and clearly labeled circuits — including dedicated spaces reserved for the future heat pump and EV charger circuits.
  • Replaced the service entrance cable from the weatherhead to the meter base and from the meter base to the new panel with 3/0 AWG copper conductors rated for 200-amp service — the existing aluminum service cable was undersized for a 200A upgrade.
  • Installed a new meter base and mast, upgraded the grounding system to current CEC requirements (two ground rods, bonding to the water main and gas line), and brought the entire service entrance up to the 2024 Canadian Electrical Code.
  • Submitted the Technical Safety BC permit, coordinated the inspection, and delivered a Certificate of Compliance — BC Hydro reconnected the service the same afternoon and the homeowners had power restored by 4:00 pm.

The Result

The Technical Safety BC inspection passed on the first visit with zero deficiencies — the inspector specifically commented on the clean panel labeling and the quality of the service entrance installation. The homeowners can now run the range, dryer, and any combination of appliances without a single trip. The dedicated spaces for the future heat pump and EV charger are pre-labeled and ready — when those projects move forward, the circuits can be added without modifying the panel.

The homeowners' insurer reduced their annual premium by $85 after reviewing the Certificate of Compliance — replacing a 40-year-old Federal Pioneer panel with a modern Square D panel lowered the home's fire risk profile. The panel upgrade also added measurable value to the home; BC real estate listings increasingly highlight "200-amp electrical service" as a selling feature, particularly in neighbourhoods like Promontory where EV adoption is rising fast.

"I'd been putting off the panel upgrade for years — partly because I didn't want to deal with the hassle of permits and inspections, and partly because I was worried about the cost. Chris came out, did the load calculation right in front of me, and showed me exactly why the old panel was a problem. He handled everything — BC Hydro disconnect, the permit, the inspection — and the whole job was done in one day. My only regret is not doing it sooner. The new panel is so tidy — every circuit labeled, surge protection built right in, and I've got room for the heat pump and EV charger when I'm ready."
