Food Processing Expertise

Electrical Systems Built for Sanitary, High-Demand Environments

Food processing electrical work is different from standard industrial electrical. It requires an understanding of washdown-rated installation methods, sanitary conduit routing, condensation management, and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency requirements that govern facility design. At CN Electrical, we bring specialized expertise in food-grade electrical infrastructure. Power outages can spoil product and halt production lines — our standby vs. portable generator guide helps processors choose the right backup power for their operation.

Our Red Seal electricians have experience with processing line motor controls, refrigeration compressor circuits, hygienic zone electrical design, and the IP-rated enclosures and sealing methods required in wet, cold, and washdown environments. Every installation is designed for cleanability, corrosion resistance, and compliance with both the Canadian Electrical Code and CFIA facility standards.

Whether you're expanding a dairy processing line, building a new cold storage facility, or upgrading an existing bottling plant's electrical infrastructure, CN Electrical delivers clean, professional work that keeps your production running and your facility inspection-ready.

What We Offer

Food Processing Electrical Services

Comprehensive electrical solutions for food processing facilities throughout the Fraser Valley — from dairy and produce to bottling and protein processing.

Washdown-Rated Motor & Equipment Circuits

Dedicated circuits for processing line motors, mixers, conveyors, and packaging equipment — installed with IP65 and IP66 rated enclosures, liquid-tight flexible conduit, and proper bonding methods suitable for wet and washdown environments per CEC Section 22 requirements for corrosive and wet locations.

Refrigeration & Cold Storage Power

Electrical infrastructure for walk-in coolers, freezers, blast chillers, and refrigerated processing areas — including compressor circuits, evaporator fan power, defrost control wiring, and temperature monitoring system integration with alarm notification for cold chain compliance.

Processing Line Power Distribution

Power distribution design for multi-stage processing lines — from receiving and wash stations through cutting, cooking, packaging, and palletizing zones. Includes properly sized bus ducts, sub-panels, and disconnect switches positioned for operator access and sanitation clearance.

Sanitary Design & Compliance

Electrical installations designed for cleanability and CFIA compliance — sloped conduit tops, standoff mounting from walls and ceilings, sealed penetrations between processing zones, and stainless steel enclosures in direct food contact areas. We understand the difference between hygienic zones and standard industrial areas.

Main Service & Distribution Upgrades

Food processing expansions demand robust electrical infrastructure. We design and install 400A, 600A, and larger service upgrades with properly coordinated distribution, surge protection, and backup generator provisions — all with future-expansion capacity built into load calculations and panel schedules.

Preventative Maintenance Programs

Scheduled electrical inspections and maintenance tailored to food processing facilities — thermal imaging of panels, motor connections, and refrigeration equipment; GFCI and ground-fault testing; enclosure integrity checks; and documented compliance records for your HACCP and CFIA audit requirements.

Why CN Electrical

The Electrical Partner Your Production Line Depends On

Food processing electrical work is unforgiving — a single improperly sealed conduit penetration can become a condensation point and a CFIA non-compliance finding. An undersized motor starter can trip during peak production. A control panel not rated for washdown can fail and halt an entire shift's output. CN Electrical understands the consequences of getting it wrong, and we design every installation to be right from day one.

  • Red Seal journeyman electricians — experienced with food processing facility electrical requirements
  • Full Technical Safety BC permit and inspection management for every project
  • Experience with washdown-rated installations, IP-rated enclosures, and sanitary conduit routing
  • Understanding of CFIA facility design standards and hygienic zone electrical requirements
  • Flexible scheduling — we work around your production windows and sanitation shifts
  • Corrosion-resistant materials and installation methods suitable for wet, cold, and chemical washdown environments
  • $5M commercial liability insurance coverage
  • Serving food processors, dairy plants, and beverage facilities from Chilliwack to Abbotsford and throughout the Fraser Valley

The Challenge

A dairy processing facility near Greendale had outgrown its 400A electrical service after adding a second bottling line and expanding cold storage capacity. The existing electrical infrastructure — much of it original from the 1990s — was showing its age: non-washdown-rated enclosures in processing areas were developing corrosion, refrigeration compressor circuits were undersized for the new equipment, and the main distribution panel lacked the spare capacity for planned future expansion into cheese production.

The upgrade had to be completed while the facility remained in full production — milk doesn't wait. Additionally, every electrical installation in processing and washdown zones had to meet current CFIA facility design standards, with proper documentation for the facility's next federal inspection. Any production downtime during the cutover would mean lost product and disrupted milk pickup schedules for the facility's dozen dairy farm suppliers.

Our Approach

  • Designed and installed a new 800A, 600V three-phase service with a main switchboard, power factor correction, and surge protection — including 30% spare breaker capacity for future cheese production equipment and a second cold storage expansion already in the owner's five-year plan.
  • Replaced all processing-area electrical with washdown-rated installations — IP66 stainless steel disconnects and enclosures, liquid-tight flexible conduit with proper drain fittings, sloped conduit routing to prevent condensation pooling, and sealed penetrations between hygienic processing zones and non-production areas per CFIA requirements.
  • Installed dedicated refrigeration circuits with proper motor starter coordination for new screw compressors, evaporator fans, and condensers serving the expanded cold storage and blast chiller — including phase loss protection and temperature monitoring integration with the facility's cold chain management system.
  • Built a temporary power distribution system to keep the original bottling line operational throughout construction — isolating the new installation zones so production continued uninterrupted during the six-week electrical upgrade. The cutover to the new service was completed during a scheduled 12-hour sanitation window.
  • Provided full as-built documentation including single-line diagrams, panel schedules, and a zone-by-zone enclosure IP rating schedule for the facility's HACCP plan and CFIA compliance records.

The Result

The service upgrade and facility-wide electrical modernization was completed on schedule — six weeks from permit to final inspection — with zero unplanned production downtime. Every Technical Safety BC inspection passed on the first visit. The facility's CFIA inspector reviewed and approved the electrical documentation package during the next scheduled inspection, noting the washdown-rated installations as a best-practice example for dairy processing facilities.

The dairy now operates with modern, code-compliant electrical infrastructure capable of supporting the planned cheese production expansion and additional cold storage without further service upgrades. The facility manager reports that nuisance breaker trips — a recurring issue with the old installation — have been eliminated entirely. CN Electrical continues to provide annual electrical inspections and thermal imaging for the facility.

"Upgrading a dairy plant's electrical while staying in full production is no small ask — CN Electrical handled it flawlessly. Chris mapped out every phase, kept our bottling line running the whole time, and the washdown-rated installations are exactly what our CFIA inspector wanted to see. The documentation package alone saved us hours of prep before our federal inspection. We won't use anyone else."
