Smart Home Wiring & Automation

The Foundation of Every Smart Home Is In the Walls

Smart home devices — thermostats, lighting, cameras, speakers, blinds, doorbells, locks — all need two things to work reliably: power and connectivity. Wireless devices still need power. Wi-Fi devices still need a strong, stable network backbone. And every smart device you add is another device competing for bandwidth on your home network. Structured wiring solves all of these problems before they start.

CN Electrical takes an infrastructure-first approach to smart homes. We plan where your devices will live — now and in the future — and install the dedicated circuits, Cat6 data runs, and structured wiring panels that give every device the power and connectivity it needs. The result is a smart home that responds instantly, never drops offline, and is ready for whatever technology comes next.

From new builds in Promontory where we rough in structured wiring before the drywall goes up, to retrofits in Sardis where we fish Cat6 through existing walls, our Red Seal electricians deliver smart home infrastructure that's safe, code-compliant, and built to grow with your family.

What We Offer

Smart Home Wiring & Automation Services

Structured wiring, smart lighting, automated blinds, and whole-home networking — professionally installed by licensed electricians, built for reliability from the walls out.

Structured Wiring & Home Network Cabling

Professional Cat6 and fibre-optic structured cabling from a central wiring panel to every room — providing hardwired gigabit connectivity for smart TVs, gaming consoles, desktop computers, and Wi-Fi access points. We install properly rated in-wall cabling, terminate every run to patch panels, and label everything so you know exactly what goes where. No more buffering, dead zones, or Wi-Fi congestion.

Smart Lighting Control Wiring

Pre-wiring and installation for smart lighting systems — including Lutron, Leviton, and other major platforms. We install neutral wires at every switch location (required for most smart switches), run low-voltage control wiring for centralized lighting panels, and set up multi-way switching circuits that work seamlessly with app-based and voice control.

Automated Blinds, Shades & Motors

Dedicated power circuits for motorized blinds and shades — hardwired to each window location and controlled via wall switches, remotes, or smart home integration. Hardwired motors are quieter, more reliable, and never need battery changes. We rough in wiring during construction or renovation, install junction boxes at each window location, and coordinate with your blind supplier for seamless integration.

Security Camera & Doorbell Pre-Wiring

Cat6 and power runs to exterior camera locations, doorbell locations, and interior security points — providing reliable PoE (Power over Ethernet) connectivity that doesn't depend on Wi-Fi or battery life. We install weatherproof junction boxes at every exterior location, run conduit where required, and terminate everything to a central equipment location ready for your security system hardware.

Smart Thermostat & HVAC Control Wiring

Proper thermostat wiring for smart thermostats — including common wire installation where missing, multi-zone HVAC control wiring, and integration with in-floor heating controllers, HRV systems, and whole-home humidification. We ensure your smart thermostat has the wiring it needs for full functionality, not just basic heating and cooling.

Whole-Home Wi-Fi & Access Point Installation

Ceiling-mounted and wall-mounted Wi-Fi access points with hardwired Cat6 backhaul — delivering fast, stable coverage to every corner of your home and outdoor living areas. We install access points in optimal locations based on your home's layout and construction materials, run the cabling cleanly through attics and crawlspaces, and terminate everything to a PoE switch in your structured wiring panel.

Why CN Electrical

Smart Home Wiring Done Right, By Licensed Electricians

The smart home industry is full of companies that know technology but not electrical code — and electricians who know code but not technology. CN Electrical brings both. We design and install smart home infrastructure that meets Canadian Electrical Code requirements AND delivers the performance your devices demand. When your structured wiring is installed by licensed electricians, it's safe, permitted, inspected, and built to the same professional standard as your electrical panel.

  • Red Seal journeyman electricians who understand both line-voltage electrical code AND low-voltage structured cabling — bridging the gap between electricians and AV installers
  • Infrastructure-first approach — we design and install the wiring backbone that makes smart home devices work reliably, not just plug in gadgets that compete for Wi-Fi
  • Neutral wires at every switch location — most smart switches require a neutral, and many older homes don't have them. We pull neutrals where needed so your smart lighting works properly
  • Proper separation of line-voltage and low-voltage cabling per Canadian Electrical Code — preventing interference, ensuring safety, and passing inspection the first time
  • Future-proof planning — we rough in conduit and pull strings to key locations so adding new technology later doesn't mean opening walls
  • Experience coordinating with builders, AV integrators, security companies, and blind suppliers — we make sure the electrical infrastructure is ready when their hardware arrives
  • $5M commercial liability insurance coverage
  • Serving Chilliwack homeowners building new or upgrading existing homes — from Promontory to Garrison Crossing and throughout the Fraser Valley

Promontory New Build — Full Structured Wiring & Smart Home Pre-Wire

How CN Electrical wired a 3,600 sq ft custom home from the foundation up with structured cabling, smart lighting circuits, automated blind power, and whole-home networking — giving the homeowners a future-proofed smart home before the drywall went up.

The Challenge

A custom 3,600 sq ft home under construction in Promontory needed complete structured wiring and smart home pre-wiring before the drywall stage. The homeowners had a clear vision: smart lighting in every room, motorized blinds on all main-floor windows, ceiling-mounted Wi-Fi access points for seamless coverage, security camera pre-wiring at all exterior doors, and a central structured wiring panel that would keep everything organized and accessible.

The builder's standard electrical package didn't include any low-voltage or smart home wiring. The homeowners needed a licensed electrician who could design and install the complete infrastructure — coordinating with the builder's framing and drywall schedule, and ensuring every circuit and cable run met Canadian Electrical Code requirements for both line-voltage and low-voltage installations.

Our Approach

  • Designed a complete structured wiring plan with the homeowners — mapping every data drop, access point location, camera position, blind motor junction box, and smart switch location across all three floors — with a central 42-inch structured wiring panel in the mechanical room.
  • Installed a dedicated 20-amp circuit for the structured wiring panel with integrated surge protection — providing clean, protected power for the network switch, PoE injectors, smart home hub, and modem that would live in the panel.
  • Ran Cat6 cabling to every room — two drops per bedroom, four drops to the home office, two to the great room media wall, and dedicated runs to six ceiling-mounted Wi-Fi access point locations for seamless whole-home coverage including the covered deck.
  • Pulled neutral wires to every switch location and installed deep device boxes throughout — ensuring compatibility with smart switches and dimmers, with separate low-voltage conduits to key window locations for automated blind motor power.
  • Pre-wired seven exterior camera locations with Cat6 for PoE — at the front door, garage, back patio, and perimeter — with weatherproof junction boxes, conduit protection where exposed, and all runs terminated and labeled in the structured wiring panel.
  • Provided a complete as-built documentation package — structured wiring panel schedule, Cat6 run list with room-by-room labeling, circuit directory, and photographs of every wall before drywall — organized for the homeowners and their future AV integrator.

The Result

The rough-in inspection passed on the first visit — with both the line-voltage and low-voltage work properly separated per Canadian Electrical Code. The homeowners moved in with every smart home circuit and cable run in place, tested, labeled, and documented. Their AV integrator was able to install Wi-Fi access points, smart switches, cameras, and the blind motors in a single day because every wire was already where it needed to be, clearly labeled, and terminated to the right place in the structured wiring panel.

The builder was so impressed with the documentation and organization that they've since recommended CN Electrical to three other custom home clients — and the homeowners report that their Wi-Fi coverage is flawless on every floor, their smart lighting responds instantly, and they've already added two additional PoE cameras using the spare Cat6 runs we pulled to those locations during rough-in.

"We knew we wanted a smart home but had no idea where to start — and our builder's electrician didn't do low-voltage. CN Electrical sat down with us, walked through every room, and designed a wiring plan that covered everything we wanted plus things we hadn't even thought of. When our AV guy came to install the gear, he said it was the cleanest, best-labeled pre-wire he'd ever seen. Everything worked on day one. Couldn't be happier."
