Get a Free QuoteKeep Your Power On When the Grid Goes Down
A properly installed standby generator isn't a luxury — it's insurance for your home and family. When the power fails, a standby generator automatically starts, the transfer switch isolates your home from the grid, and your essential circuits are back online before the lights have even stopped flickering. No running outside in a storm, no extension cords, no refueling at 2 AM.
CN Electrical manages every aspect of generator installation — from the initial load calculation that determines the right generator size for your home, to the transfer switch installation, to the generator pad and electrical connections, to the final Technical Safety BC inspection. We coordinate with your gas fitter for natural gas or propane connections and ensure the entire installation meets Canadian Electrical Code requirements.
Whether you're protecting a family home in Sardis, a dairy farm in Greendale that can't afford a milking interruption, or a commercial kitchen in downtown Chilliwack where a power outage means lost inventory, CN Electrical delivers generator installations you can count on.

Backup Generator Services
Standby and portable generator installations — sized to your needs, installed to code, and ready for the next Fraser Valley power outage.
Whole-Home Standby Generators
Permanent standby generators — typically Generac or Kohler — sized to your home's electrical load and installed on a concrete or composite pad outside. Includes automatic transfer switch, load management module if needed, and connection to your natural gas line or propane tank. We handle the complete installation from generator pad to final wiring, with coordination of your gas fitter and inspection through Technical Safety BC.
Automatic Transfer Switch Installation
Installation of automatic transfer switches (ATS) that detect an outage and switch your home to generator power within seconds — then switch back when utility power is restored. We install service-entrance-rated and sub-panel configurations, size the ATS to your generator and electrical service, and program the weekly self-test cycle that keeps your generator ready.
Portable Generator Inlet & Interlock Kits
For homeowners who prefer a portable generator, we install outdoor-rated power inlet boxes with manual transfer or interlock kits — providing a safe, code-compliant way to power essential circuits without running extension cords through doors or backfeeding the panel. Includes a dedicated breaker in your main panel and a clearly labeled inlet that makes connecting your portable generator quick and safe.
Generator Sizing & Load Calculations
Professional load analysis to determine the right generator size for your specific needs — whether you want to power just essential circuits (furnace, sump pump, fridge, freezer, well pump, a few lights) or your entire home including air conditioning and electric range. We calculate starting surge loads for motors and compressors, recommend the correct kW rating, and explain the trade-offs so you can make an informed decision.
Generator Maintenance & Service
Annual maintenance for standby generators — oil and filter changes, spark plug inspection, battery testing, transfer switch function testing, and full system verification under load. We also offer on-demand troubleshooting and repair for generators that fail to start during their self-test cycle or show warning indicators. Regular maintenance ensures your generator starts when you need it most.
Farm & Commercial Generator Systems
Larger standby generators for agricultural operations, commercial kitchens, and small businesses where a power outage means lost product, interrupted operations, or animal welfare concerns. Includes three-phase generator installations for farms with three-phase equipment, load-shedding controllers that prioritize critical circuits, and coordination with BC Hydro for commercial service requirements.
Generator Installation You Can Count On — When It Counts
A generator is the one appliance you buy hoping you never need — and it has to work perfectly the moment you do. That's why generator installation demands an electrician who gets it right the first time. CN Electrical handles every detail, from the load calculation that ensures your generator is properly sized to the transfer switch wiring that ensures it kicks in when the grid drops. Your generator is permitted, inspected, and tested under load — so when the next Fraser Valley windstorm hits, you're not the one scrambling.
- Red Seal journeyman electricians — generators involve line-voltage connections, grounding, bonding, and transfer switch wiring that must meet Canadian Electrical Code and Technical Safety BC requirements
- Complete project management — we handle generator sizing, load calculations, equipment ordering, gas line coordination with your gas fitter, generator pad placement, transfer switch installation, electrical connections, and Technical Safety BC permit and inspection
- Experience with all major brands — Generac, Kohler, Briggs & Stratton, and Cummins standby generators, plus portable generator inlet and interlock installations
- Farm and commercial experience — we understand three-phase generator systems, load-shedding priorities for dairy and poultry operations, and the unique requirements of agricultural backup power
- Weekly self-test programming — we configure your generator's automatic test cycle so it runs for 5-10 minutes each week under load, catching issues before an outage, not during one
- Coordination with BC Hydro for service upgrades when your existing electrical service needs upsizing to accommodate a generator installation
- $5M commercial liability insurance coverage
- Serving homeowners, farmers, and businesses from Chilliwack to Agassiz and throughout the Fraser Valley — because nobody in the valley is immune to a windstorm outage

Sardis Acreage — 22kW Standby Generator with Whole-Home Backup
How CN Electrical installed a whole-home standby generator system on a Sardis acreage property — protecting a family of four, their home-based business, and critical well and sump pumps through Fraser Valley storm season.

The Challenge
A family of four living on a 5-acre property in Sardis had endured three multi-day power outages over the previous two winters — each time losing well water, sump pump protection for their finished basement, the freezer full of farm-raised meat, and the internet connection their home-based bookkeeping business depended on. Their existing 125-amp electrical service was near capacity, and they wanted a generator large enough to power the entire home — including the well pump's starting surge, the sump pump, the furnace, two refrigerators and a chest freezer, and the home office equipment.
The property's layout added complexity: the gas meter was on the opposite side of the house from the electrical panel, the generator pad needed to meet clearance requirements from windows, doors, and the property line, and the existing panel didn't have the capacity or the physical space for the required 200-amp automatic transfer switch.
Our Approach
- Performed a detailed load calculation and starting-surge analysis — measuring the well pump's locked-rotor current, the furnace blower motor inrush, and the total connected load of all circuits the family wanted on backup — to confirm a 22kW generator was properly sized with adequate surge capacity.
- Upgraded the existing 125-amp panel to a 200-amp service with a service-entrance-rated automatic transfer switch — providing capacity for the generator and future-proofing the home's electrical system, with coordination with BC Hydro for the service disconnect and reconnect.
- Installed the 22kW Generac standby generator on a concrete pad on the gas-meter side of the house — with a trench for the gas line by the gas fitter and a separate trench for the electrical feeders, control wiring, and grounding conductor back to the transfer switch, all at proper burial depth per Canadian Electrical Code.
- Configured load management with a smart load-shedding module for the electric range and air conditioner — ensuring the generator can handle the whole house without overloading, by temporarily shedding non-critical loads if the total demand approaches the generator's capacity.
- Programmed the weekly self-test cycle for Thursday mornings at 10 AM — running the generator under load for 10 minutes each week, with automatic notification if the test fails — and walked the homeowners through the generator's control panel, the manual override procedure, and the maintenance schedule.
- Managed the Technical Safety BC installation permit and inspection — with the installation passing on first visit and the certificate of inspection provided to the homeowners and their insurance provider, who acknowledged the generator with a premium discount.
The Result
Three weeks after the installation was completed, a windstorm knocked out power to the Sardis area for 18 hours. The generator started automatically, the transfer switch seamlessly isolated the home, and the family didn't even notice the outage until a neighbour texted to ask if they had power. The home-based bookkeeping business didn't miss an email. The sump pump ran through the storm without issue. The freezers stayed frozen.
The homeowners have since recommended CN Electrical to two neighbouring acreage properties, and the insurance premium discount for the professionally installed standby generator effectively pays for the annual maintenance service. The family's only regret, they told Chris, was not installing it two winters sooner.
"After our third winter losing power for days, I'd had enough — especially with the well pump and sump pump, and a freezer full of beef. CN Electrical walked us through the whole process, handled BC Hydro and the gas fitter, and the installation is so clean. Three weeks later the windstorm hit and our generator kicked in like it had been there for years. My wife runs her bookkeeping business from home and didn't lose a single hour of work. Best investment we've made in this property."
